Olivia was sick on Tuesday. She had a fever but no other symptoms and the next day was back to normal, like nothing happened at all. I was grateful since it was my birthday and we wanted to go do some fun activities.
This morning I went to get Walter out of bed and he was on fire and still asleep at 9. I was sad that he was sick now. I tried really hard not to let him get Olivia's binks or water cups. Olivia was dying to get out and play at the park but it looked like it would be another movie and lay in bed day. Olivia was super cuddly when she was sick and I was hoping Walt would be too.
We ate breakfast and watched a Curious George movie. His temperature was 101.8 when we started the movie then he fell asleep. When he woke up he was really warm, we watched an episode of Thomas the Train and I took his temperature again and it was 102.6, I told Michael at 10:37. I called my mom and asked her what I should do. He was slightly falling asleep in my arms on my bed then he got restless and flopped out of my arms to lay on the bed. I was talking to my mom watching him when his eyes rolled back and he started shaking uncontrollably and making sounds that scared me even more. I cried to my mom asking her what I should do, he was having a seizure. She told me to call 911 so I hung up picked him up and called at 11:16. They asked my address and told me to undress him. Of course I couldn't remember my new address and was panicking. They told me to calm down and I got them my address. He told me to take Walter's clothes off and to lay him on his side. I was freaking out. His lips turned blue, he wasn't breathing very well or at all, he must have bit his lip because there was blood in his drool, he was not there. This all took 1 minute or less.
After I set Walt on his side he started breathing again and the shaking stopped. That was the longest most scary minute of my life. As I type this the emotions of the whole experience are coming back. It was awful! I wish no mother had to go through this! The helplessness was heartbreaking. Even as I reread my experience it will never do it justice all the scary emotions that come up. As he shook I cried out to Heavenly Father to help my little man. He was there and really helped me calm down.
It took only 3 or 4 minutes for the firemen to get to our apartment. I got the firemen cool wash cloths for Walter and while I was in the bathroom I bawled. The firemen were so kind, they kept reassuring me over and over that this happens all the time and he will be just fine. My mom called Michael the second I hung up the phone with her and he got to our apartment just as the paramedics did. It's such a blessing that Michael works 5 minutes away. We gave Walt Tylenol and we got to take a ride in an ambulance. Walt slept after the seizure until we got to the hospital then he started crying. Michael and Olivia followed us to the hospital. Michael called our home teacher who met us at the hospital. They gave Walter a blessing and after 10 minutes at the hospital we were all alone. Walt was asleep and Olivia was watching Snow White. We finished the movie and they checked on Walt and let us go. We got home and you would have never guessed Walter had a seizure that morning. He was making messes running around and cuddling with me.
His fever started to come back around 7 to 100.8, we gave him Tylenol again and put cool wash cloths on him. We brought it down to 98.5 and now he is in bed. I'm a bit paranoid and will be checking on him a lot.
The doctors told us that babies can't regulate fevers like adults can so they have seizures. The seizure was caused because of the spike of his fever not because he had one to begin with. It's most likely to happen again now when he has fevers until he is 5. When he has them you just need to let it do it's thing, lay him on his side and get the fever down.
I'm glad today is over and Walt is doing better an there is no permanent damage done and he will be just fine.
